How to make wraparound shorts

My friend, Alexandra Jane, was wearing shorts that she made herself and she showed me how to make them!
They're not normal shorts because to put them on you don't step into leg holes...
No zips or buttons, they literally wrap around you and tie up at the front.

In one piece...
I'm a beginner to sewing; I've made elastic-waist skirts from skills I learnt in Year 7-8 "soft materials" class and an envelope cushion cover. But all of those are literally sewing 2 pieces of rectangles together. These shorts are more of a logic challenge.

The hard part is figuring out your measurements. I had to cut out a lot off my original pieces because I over-estimated. And figuring out in your head which part to sew first was tricky logic.
So I've put together a 'guide' in case you want to try it yourself!
Note: the shorts I made are not perfect at all, there are a lot of mistakes and dodgy sewing. So the guide below is what I should've done or would do next time. Also my sewing jargon isn't that great...

First, you'll need one metre of fabric that is at least 70 cm wide.
The left panel above is the back of the shorts and right is front. You'll need two pieces of each.

A: This is the back part that goes around your waist/ hips to the front. I measured from the middle of my back to halfway between my belly button and hip and used 12 inches for this measurement. Depends how close together you want the opening to be at the front.

B: This is the underside of the shorts, I guesstimated and ended up cutting off a lot of fabric. In the end, it turned out to be 3.5 to 4 inches. This is the same measurement for both front and back panels.

C: This is the length of the shorts. A good guide is to grab a pair of shorts you already own and use that measurement. Mine was 15 inches for mid length worn at the hips. Use the shorts again to measure D. You can work out E from this.

F: This is the front part that wraps around to the back. Again, depends how close together you want the opening at the back. I used 14 inches for this. So G came to about 18 inches.

Please note the above measurements do not include seam allowances. Use a 2 inch seam allowance.

I sewed the edges of my fabric so they don't fray.
I sewed the two back panels together along the 'L'. Repeat with the two front panels.
Fold and hem up the bottom and top. I sewed the ribbons on the back panels at the same time as hemming.
To attach the front and back panels, sew along side 'D'.
For the back panels I used ribbons to tie up at the front, but for the back I used a short piece of elastic.
My friend had hers buttoned up at the back. But I haven't learnt the button function on my sewing machine yet, so I decided to use a bit of elastic.
And then that's it.
It should look like the above when you've stitched it all together. It's pretty easy because the pieces are symmetrical. And you're only really sewing along the 'L' and down.
I sewed the ribbons lower and not at the top of the fabric. This is so it will tie up over the fabric at the front and not over my bare stomach.
The back wraps around to the front, and if the A and F measurements aren't long enough, then it will split up the side when you sit down and be too revealing.
This is how it looks when I sit down.
I love how nautical this looks with the red ribbon! I got the fabric from Centrepoint fabrics in Newmarket (next to Zarbo) for $10 a metre, I believe.
I think it looks cute with brown leather heels...

Here is my own illustrated guide...
I haven't figured out how to go toilet with these. It'll be like when you're wearing a playsuit and you have to take it off...
White eyelet crop top: Dotti
Watch: Fjord
Brown leather heels: Hannahs

Next sewing blogpost will be on the elastic-waist skirts that I mentioned earlier. If you're a beginner to sewing, the skirt will be perfect because it is super easy!

Twenty One

I turned 21 on 9th October. And I felt very very loved and special all day Wednesday!

I woke up to birthday Snapchats, including this gorgeous one...
thanks kiki <3

Lauren took me out to dinner!

We went to Atico Cocina
A very nice, chilled, comfortable and open South American restaurant at Victoria Park.

Their website is here including their menu and info on function room
The restaurant was one big open room. Brightly decorated, with couches and even a swing seat in the corner and a large bar in the centre.

Our drinks yea! Can't remember what they were called but it was real delicious cocktails.
Sweet and a bit on the strong side
My first cocktail!
Jamaican chicken jerk.
Jerk chicken breast, creole okra, plantain chips with fennel and pineapple slaw.

This is what I had and I tell you, the chips were AMAZING.
Where can I get some more??

I just looked up what plantain was: it is actually a fruit! That looks almost exactly like a banana but does not taste like it at all. So good...
The chicken was spicy however, but it was very tender and oh so juicy.
Lauren's roast pork fillet; Filete de cerdo dulce, the signature dish.
With chorizo stuffing, chilli apple glaze, cassava puree, pico de gallo and watercress.
Again, delicious.

We then went to dessert night with the 2013/ 2014 committed student leaders of Auckland Studentlife.

White choc mudcake, caramel latte and Henry Yeah's strawberry sponge cake.
We each got given a book wrapped in ribbon... and ended up being wrapped in the ribbon ourselves

And I came home to this!! 21 things from my long-time friend, Hayley
It came in a massive box of parcel, gift wrapped and in a NAUTICAL box!!
Lotions, NAUTICAL napkins, chocolate, cupcake lip gloss, notepad, tissue pack, teddy bear and the first key on a bracelet!

Thank you so much
Our little neighbours popped by today and gave me a little gift too!
Purple party eyeshadow and body butter.
A delicate handkerchief all the way from Whangarei

However the first gift of the day was this.
Hand delivered by a man in a formal wear who waited for me at my bus stop
I've wanted this perfume for a while! I LOVE THE SMELL
Thank you... <3
What a beautiful card! Witha  rhyming poem inside too!
I was just looking at those notebooks yesterday!! And I was searching for a day planner yesterday too! Perfect.
Cake tester, sprinkles and cookie cutters <3
Thank you
So sweet and so thoughtful! Thank you
I made Abby write in it too and she was self conscious that her handwriting would spoil the book...
I think her handwriting looks like the printed font.
Along with the Moschino perfume, it came with samples. I thought it was funny; Taylor gave me 'Taylor' by Taylor Swift.
Most surprising: Secret Blessings.
I got told by Abby to go to the locker, and I found these!!
I was so excited when I saw the Lush packet and SO SURPRISED when she got me what I had been wanting since the start of the year! Lip scrub!
Cause after radiation, my mouth and lips go dry really quickly, but I tell you I've used the scrub twice already (tastes so good) and it makes your lips supple and soft.

Can't wait to scoff those macarons as well. I've only ever had the cappuccino ones and they are gooood.

Thank you Secret Blessings. You know who you are (I don't!)
At our group meeting, I was greeted by my engineering boys with sour skittles and Bueno.
How did you guys know Bueno is my favorite chocolate?!
Aww <3 so touched
My long time friend delivered this to my mailbox with a hilarious card that had all the stuff we bonded over during Year 12/ 13 ... dear me
I love... Kikki K!
My family gave me a printed photo album! So nice. I'll show you some time

My brother made me breakfast/ brunch!
They were nice waffles, even if it did take him an hour to make and he had to wake me up to ask why the mixture was lumpy and if the egg whites were stiff enough :p hahahaha learning curve
And then I heard a "YAAAY" and the first waffle was served!

A couple of you have been asking about the whipped peanut butter.
Thank you Nina for recommending it to me!! It is light, not sticky, slightly denser texture than whipped cream and most importantly doesn't get stuck on the top of your mouth.
I got it from Countdown!

And then Google gave me a birthday greeting ;)

And to conclude,

I am getting an external flash for my Canon 600D courtesy of the parentals
If you have tips on what to purchase/ where to purchase an entry-level flash, let me know please!!

A little bit about Waiheke Island

Who went to Waiheke and didn't take their DSLR? -.-

But it wasn't as bed as I imagined, I hate the feeling of forgetting your camera and itching to take a photo of the scenery. Luckily the 5MP camera on the iPod Touch 5 was sufficient for the 3 day trip.

I had just returned from a fantastic first-time-ever-Parachute with my Student Life siblings, hadn't had enough of the intense sun (I have tanlines from my watch, the AWOP wrist band, jandals and crisscross top) so I joined my mum who was already in Waiheke for more sun.
Bye Auckland... on the ferry
I hadn't been to Waiheke before, I just heard that it's an island of vineyards and lifestyle houses, and my friend Mr Bond lives there (I still don't understand how he commutes by ferry everyday to uni)

Waiheke is an island 40 minutes by ferry, it is part of Auckland, which I thought was funny, I just couldn't grasp the fact that an island separate to Auckland is still Auckland... It was even stranger thinking about people living on an island that isn't its own country... Anyway
You can also take your car from Half Moon Bay wharf.
Cruise ship I saw on the way
We stayed right in front of Oneroa beach

Oneroa in the evening
We visited some vineyards. This one was called Mudbrick Vineyard
I think it would be such a lovely place for a wedding reception...
I mean, look at these romantic stairs...
My mum told me that someone had booked it for a wedding in 2015.
Lol has he even proposed yet?

I was inventing scenarios for this.
Maybe they're a long distance couple and she lives in Switzerland, and she's going to visit him in 2 years time and when she does BOOM he proposes that they get married right there and then.

Maybe the couple are doing a pre-wedding honeymoon and sailing to New Zealand from Turkey, and by the time they get here, which will be in 2015, they're going to get married.

Maybe the girl is waiting to grow her hair so she can have it in a plait bun on the day.

Maybe they're waiting for the flower girl to be old enough to walk down the aisle.

Maybe they're shipping the wedding gown garment from Egypt and the cotton hasn't grown yet.

Maybe he's still saving up for the ring.
The vineyards
I really like the French style building and the gardens surrounding it
Being on a hill, it held a bewitching view of Rangitoto Island.
(It was weird thinking you're seeing the other side of Rangitoto)
Mudbrick is also a restaurant. There is indoor seating if you order meals, but we sat outside on the couches under the umbrella and ordered foccacia bread with homemade dips: cream cheese dip and hummus.
Salt & pepper squid

Another popular wedding location, they even had brochures by the door, is Cable Bay vineyards
Wouldn't it make a stunning venue !

Nearby is a Mediterranean style house which we visited to view the artworks of the artist who resides there
This is the view from the from the house :o

Waiheke is so nautical.

Down a little walkway at Kennedy Point, we arrived on a little secluded rocky beach
With water as clear as diamonds on a ring
Such an idyllic little place for a swim...
Oh and I had some food.
Calzone from Dragonfired, they sell woodfired pizzas in a van on Little Oneroa beach. Yum

And to conclude,
I played chess with my brother and I was down to my queen and king and then he ate my queen. Lauren is going to provide me with some training at CSL retreat...
